Best Time of the Year to Dive in Playa del Carmen

If you’re dreaming of diving in warm, turquoise waters filled with marine life and unique cave systems, Playa del Carmen is the place to be. But when is the best time to dive here? The short answer: all year round! That said, each season offers something unique — from migrating bull sharks to crystal-clear cenote conditions. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose the perfect time for your next dive adventure.

Diving Seasons in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen enjoys a tropical climate, meaning warm waters and diveable conditions year-round. However, your experience can vary depending on what you’re looking for:

November to March – Bull Shark Season (Ocean Diving)

  • Water temperature: 26–28°C (79–82°F)

  • Visibility: 20–30 meters

  • Highlight: Encounter majestic bull sharks in their natural habitat (no feeding).
This is the best time if you’re looking for excitement and wildlife. We run controlled, respectful dives to see these powerful creatures — a must-do for experienced divers.

May to September – Best for Cenote Diving

  • Water temperature (cenotes): 24–25°C (75–77°F)

  • Visibility: Crystal-clear (over 50 meters!)

  • Highlight: Stunning light rays in the cenotes
During these months, the sun is higher, creating the iconic beams of light inside the cenotes. The jungle is lush, the caves are dry, and visibility is at its best. It’s the perfect time for photographers and cave diving lovers.

June to October – Warmest Water & Marine Life Bloom

  • Water temperature: 28–30°C (82–86°F)

  • Highlight: Sea turtles, rays, and reef life in full display
This is the warmest season, and marine life is thriving. It’s a great time for beginners to do their Open Water course, and for divers who love coral reef exploration.

April & October – Transition Months

  • These months can be a great balance:

    • Fewer tourists

    • Warm water

    • Good visibility in both ocean and cenotes
April and October are ideal for divers who want variety, combining reef and cenote.
